Cathedral News and Events

6 September 2012

Cathedral marks 100 years.

On October 2, 1912, Archbishop S.E. Matheson ceremonially laid the cornerstone of St. Matthew’s Anglican Church, now known as St. Matthew’s Cathedral. Standing at the corner of 13th Street and Louise Avenue, St. Matthew’s has been one of Brandon’s major landmarks ever since, receiving Provincial Heritage site designation in 1999. Designed by noted Brandon architect W. A. Elliott, the church is regarded as his masterpiece.

At a time when other notable Brandon buildings of the same period are only memories, St. Matthew’s still stands, a visible testimony to the vision of the congregation in 1912 and over the succeeding century.

The parish is planning to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the laying of the cornerstone with two days of events.

·         On Saturday, September 22, from 1 – 3 PM, we will welcome children of the wider community to explore the building in a Cathedral Treasure Hunt. Ice cream and lemonade will be served, and games and activities will be set up on Louise Avenue.

·         On Sunday, September 23 we will hold a special service of thanksgiving for the building and the parish’s ministry, with Bishop Jim presiding. At the conclusion of the service, the congregation will gather outside on Louise Avenue, where the Bishop will re-dedicate the cornerstone. The service at 10:30 AM will be followed by a celebratory parish lunch, and an open house in the Cathedral, running from 1 – 3 PM.

Fall – and a new season at the Cathedral

The autumn season is upon us, and St. Matthew’s returns to “winter mode” in its worship on Sunday, September 9. Sunday School begins again at the 10:30 AM service, with the children going their classes after the children’s talk. The Choir returns after its summer break, also at the 10:30 service. 8:15 worship remains unchanged, a said celebration of the Holy Eucharist, according to the Book of Common Prayer.

A sandwich lunch, with ice cream cones for all, will follow the service on September 9. During this fellowship time, and for the next three Sundays, we will be holding a “ministry fair,” with sign-up sheets for those who wish to take part in the various ministries around the Cathedral.
